Teacher Kaylah Blount is using her TikTok success to promote growth in math

Rochelle Middle School math teacher Kaylah Blount is TikTok famous and on her way to break through 100,000 followers. She uses math as a creative way to reach people across the world.

“I just want to keep growing,” said Blount. “I want to keep reaching more parents, more students, more teachers, more districts. I want that kid who is struggling to look at my video and get it.”

The New Bern native is a graduate from North Carolina Central University went right into teaching after she graduated and is in her second year as a teacher in Kinston. Blount is well received by the children in her classroom, where she uses her TikTok videos as positive reinforcement for her students. Parents share her content as well as engage in the comments.

She’s not in it for the sponsorships. She’s perfectly content to “Influence the world,” through her videos. Blount has had at least two videos with over five million views.

If her students perform well, behave well, or participate in class, she uses creating a TikTok with them as a reward. The pandemic impacted student scores across the board and it shows in testing.

“It’s not about proficiency,” said Blount. “At Rochelle, we’re focusing on growth. How we can get our students to understand what they are learning?”

Her passion for math is a driving force behind both her teaching career and her TikTok videos. She started as a family and consumer science teacher but converted her license so she could teach K-6 math.

“At the end of the day, I just want to help,” said Blount. “It isn’t about the 100k. I would still be doing videos if I had five followers.”
