Mike Parker: Final 2023 edition of Chitlin Circuit set for Friday, June 23
On Friday, June 23, The 1901 Building Group will host the final edition of the 2023 Chitlin’ Circuit re-enactment. The event will run 5-8pm and is produced and hosted by D. Choci Gray at her historic 1901 Building, 129 N. Queen St., downtown Kinston.
In recognition of African American Music Month, the summer 2023 version will feature Fig Jones, comedian, musician, and charter member of the African American Music Trail of Eastern North Carolina; Leonard Palmer, Kinston High School Band Director and Future of the Funk; and Dick Knight, Godfather of the Chitlin Circuit and 2018 North Carolina Heritage Award winner.
Bill Myers, Founder of the Monitors and 2014 North Carolina Heritage Award winner, and Sam Lathan, legendary drummer with James Brown, will be in attendance.
The final version of 2023 will be a tribute to the gifted singer and Chitlin’ Circuit re-enactor, Ms. Sussie Sutton. Ms. Sutton will be celebrating her annual 29th Birthday.
