Director of Athletics and Health/PE Instructor
General Function
The Director of Athletics and Health/PE Instructor coordinates schedules, manages staffing, and event planning for the Student Center. The Director is also responsible for coordinating, advising, and supervising staff in all areas of athletics and activity-related transportation (including the LCC Foundation bus and SGA vans). The Director is responsible for the administration of athletic programs, ensuring program compliance with the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Region 10 rules and regulations. The Director teaches a course load of two health/physical education courses per semester. The Director reports to the Dean of Student Services regarding matters of athletics and student activities, and to the Dean of Arts & Sciences regarding instructional matters.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Athletics and Health/PE Instructor include, but are not limited to:
· Supervise all athletic teams and coaches for LCC sports to maintain high standards for programs, coaches, and student athletes
· Serve as instructor for health and P.E. classes
· Serve as a head coach or in an assistant role for an LCC sport
· Serve as administrator for gymnasium rentals, athletic events, and student activities
· Work closely with the Maintenance Department in properly maintaining the Student Center facility
· Prepare and manage the athletic budget, including scholarships and equipment
· Schedule vans for campus use
· Make sure all payments have been made to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Region X for annual dues
· Submit all athlete's eligibility compliance to the NJCAA for all sports
· Submit annual compliance reports to the Office of Postsecondary Education (Equity in Athletics)
· Oversee game-day operations for all home games (i.e. payment and security of officials, secure personnel to work gate and various positions at the scorer's table)
· Approve requests for purchases for all sports
· Make sure all Letters of Intent/Scholarship Agreements for each athlete are signed and entered into the NJCAA website
· Assist coaches with travel plans for all teams (lodging, transportation, and drivers)
· Assist with advising and registration for all student athletes
· Attend training and professional development to stay current on NJCAA activities
The instructional duties of the Director of Athletics and Health/PE instructor include, but are not limited to:
Mastery of Subject Matter
· Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge in the teaching discipline
· Display ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of the field or discipline
· Connect the subject matter with related fields
· Stay current in the subject matter through professional development; involvement in professional organizations; and attending professional meetings, conferences, and/or workshops
· Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate
Teaching Performance
· Teach a course load appropriate for the role of Director of Athletics (minimum of 2 classes/year)
· Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning
· Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students
· Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs
· Employ available technology, i.e. the Internet, interactive technology, etc., when appropriate
· Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate student assignments
· Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives
· Teach a variety of physical education and health courses both in the classroom, gym, Wellness Center, outside, or online
Evaluation of Student Learning
· Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives
· Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives
· Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning
· Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades each semester according to established deadlines
· Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances
Support of College Policies and Procedures
· Teach classes as assigned in a multi-campus environment
· Teach credit or non-credit courses in the teaching discipline as needed
· Post and maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and to students for advising and consultation
· Prepare, distribute, and submit syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies
· Maintain confidentiality of student information
· Exercise stewardship of college facilities, materials, and resources
· Comply with responsibilities as cited in the Lenoir Community College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Handbook for Distance Education, Policy Manual and Procedures Manual
The coaching duties of the Director of Athletics and Health/PE Instructor include, but are not limited to:
· Serve as a head coach or in an assistant role for an LCC sport
· Monitor expenditures to ensure that they adhere to prescribed limitations
· Ensure that all expenditures are properly documented and in compliance with college and NJCAA regulations
· Assist with the administration of policies and procedures with respect to academic expectations for team members
· Communicate with academic advising staff regarding athletic academic performance
· Meet with athletes on performance issues, study skills, and techniques for academic success
· Cooperate with the Athletic Trainer on physical examinations, insurance claims, medical help for injured athletes and respecting the decision by the trainer to hold out an athlete due to injury
· Report scores in a timely manner to all score reporting areas
· Maintain adequate records, statistics, scores, etc. of game results and student athletes' participation records and accomplishments
· Oversee assigned course loads; receive and respond to student inquiries, review student performance to determine appropriate grade or credit
· Manage equipment inventory
· Strive to provide the College and the community with a quality athletic program
· Represent the College, the athletic department, and the community in a positive manner
· Read, understand, and abide by the current National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Constitution and Bylaws, the Region X Constitution and Bylaws, and the sport rule book as identified in the NJCAA Constitution and Bylaws
· Adhere to the rules and regulations of Lenoir Community College
· Establish and maintain positive relations with colleagues, college faculty and staff and community members including students, parents, the press, the surrounding high schools and other interested parties
· Coordinate and direct all sport specific fundraising activities
· Perform any and all other-related duties as assigned or directed in order to promote, further, and ensure the effective and efficient operation of Lenoir Community College
Participation in College, Division, Department, and Program Activities
· Serve on college committees as assigned
· Participate in meetings and events as required
· Respond in a timely manner to requests for information
· Support both part-time and full-time colleagues
· Participate in graduation ceremonies
· Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators as an individual or as a team member
Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs
· Maintain familiarity with college goals, mission, and long-range plans
· Contribute to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels
·Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the College and its constituents
· Participate in the marketing, recruitment, and retention of students, faculty, and staff
Qualifications
· Minimum 3 years of experience managing athletic teams, supervising coaches, or serving as a head coach
· A master's degree in health, physical education, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution is required
· Must possess an understanding of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) compliance requirements
· Must possess excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
· Excellent public relations, communications, and problem-solving abilities are necessary

· Regular evening and/or weekend hours for athletic events
