The Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina's (EDPNC) International Trade Division held an event at Lenoir Community College's Aerospace & Advanced Manufacturing Center to assist local businesses with exporting their products and services. The event, part of EDPNC's annual outreach program, brought trade experts and resources directly to the local community.
Mike Hubbard, Director of the International Trade Division at EDPNC, highlighted the organization's role. "We are a nonprofit created by the legislature back in 2014. Our main goal is to help North Carolina companies expand their reach globally," Hubbard said. The EDPNC operates with five divisions, including business recruitment, existing industry support, small business advising, tourism, and international trade.
The International Trade Division focuses on helping North Carolina businesses export their products and services to international markets. "Our team is dedicated to working with companies to navigate the complexities of international trade, whether it's understanding trade rules or finding the right market for their products," Hubbard explained. The division provides its services at no charge to companies, funded by state contracts.
The event at Lenoir Community College aimed to connect local businesses with international trade managers and representatives from EDPNC's overseas offices. "We have offices in Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Middle East, covering about 90% of our exports. This week, we’re meeting with companies in different cities across the state," Hubbard said. The sessions included one-on-one meetings where businesses could discuss their export goals and challenges with trade experts.
Kinston was chosen as one of the locations for this outreach event due to its recent economic growth and development. "We haven't been in this part of the state in many years. There's been a lot happening here, so this is really timely," Hubbard noted. The choice of Lenoir Community College as the venue underscored the importance of community colleges in supporting local economic development. "Community colleges host us around the state every year, and they are just amazing. They go out of their way for us," Hubbard praised.
During the event, attendees learned about the various services EDPNC offers, including market research, trade show support, and digital marketing assistance. "We also provide grants to help companies offset the costs of attending trade shows, which can be crucial for small and mid-size businesses," Hubbard said.
The event not only provided valuable information and resources but also facilitated networking among local business owners and international trade representatives. "A lot of business happens during these networking sessions. Even if someone couldn’t meet with a specific representative, we ensure they still get the chance to connect," Hubbard explained.
Overall, the EDPNC's visit to Kinston was a significant opportunity for local businesses to explore international markets and expand their operations. "Helping businesses grow and succeed globally is our mission, and it's gratifying to see the positive impact we can have," Hubbard concluded.
