Mike Parker: SMS2025 offers insights into marketing through AI and Social Media
I came into this world at a time when the foundational ideas of computer technology were in its infancy. I was born in 1950 – just a decade after the race for computer dominance began. In 1939, George Stibitz, a scientist at Bell Labs, produced the “Model K” Adder using relays and circuitry that provided proof of concept for applying Boolean logic to the design of computers.
David Packard and Bill Hewlett founded their company in a Palo Alto, California garage. Their first product, the HP 200A Audio Oscillator, rapidly became a popular piece of test equipment for engineers. Walt Disney Pictures ordered eight of the 200B model to test recording equipment and speaker systems for the 12 specially equipped theatres that showed the movie “Fantasia” in 1940.
In 1950, the ERA 1101, one of the first commercially produced computers, came on the market. The company’s first customer was the U.S. Navy. The 1101, designed by ERA but built by Remington-Rand, was intended for high-speed computing and stored 1 million bits on its magnetic drum, one of the earliest magnetic storage devices. These early computing devices occupied a huge portion of the room where it operated.
Today, a smart phone can do much more than any of these early computers could do. Technology develops at an ever-increasing speed. We now deal with social media and watch as AI continues its meteoric rise.
This Friday at Lenoir Community College, Magic Mile Media and its partners are hosting the Social Media Summit 2025 (SMS2025), a one-day event focused on the latest in social media and AI. Experts who speak at the summit will explore how AI is transforming social media marketing. From content creation to audience engagement, the theme, “AI + Social: Innovate | Automate | Dominate,” will guide discussions on the latest tools and trends to help attendees enhance their marketing efforts and stay ahead of the competition.
One of the featured speakers is Austin Armstrong of Durham, NC. Armstrong is a lifelong digital marketer, public speaker, and host of the podcast BusinessTok. He is also the CEO of Syllaby, an AI startup that helps content creators create, schedule, and publish videos in minutes.
The summit will also feature Jason Michael Perry of Baltimore, MD. Perry is a Fractional Chief AI Officer and a seasoned executive and thought leader with more than two decades of experience. He is the author of the acclaimed free weekly newsletter “Thoughts on Tech & Things” and hosts a bi-weekly podcast in partnership with Technical.ly, a premier news organization connecting technologists, entrepreneurs, and other professionals invested in their local communities.
Paige Lord of Charlotte, NC, will also be on hand to share her expertise in the AI field. Lord is the founder of Just AI Media, a platform dedicated to advancing responsible AI and enhancing digital literacy. Through her podcast, newsletter, and social media channels, her work bridges the gap between innovation and ethics, inspiring thoughtful conversations about the future of technology.
Other speakers include several noted experts in the field. Dr. Lane Freeman of Rocky Mount, NC; Eric Lawrence of Raleigh, who serves as the Director of Growth at Imaginovation, a leading B2B software developer; Scott A. Kelly, an instructor at Campbell University who teaches courses in entrepreneurship and marketing; and Dr. Christine Kowalczyk, an Associate Professor of Marketing in the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management at East Carolina University.
