Evelyn Dove Coleman: Ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun

What Ain't Fun

There is a line in a book I just read that made me stop in my tracks. I had to close the book and ruminate on it for a while. Leaning back in my recliner, I reflected on what the author was clearly saying. The book is "Who Better Than You?" by Will Packer. The line is "Ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun."

Now, the book is filled with fantastic storytelling. Packer is a gifted storyteller and movie producer. His movies include Stomp the Yard, Ride Along, Girls Trip, and Straight Outta Compton.  Many lines in the book are brilliant and witty, like a blockbuster movie condensed into written form.

But I had never heard the line "Ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun" before. Packer was referring to how the tide had turned after he became successful. People who had been disrespectful and discourteous to him when he was an intern on a movie set right out of college did not expect him to recall them yelling at him things like, "Move. You're in the way."  When he became a successful movie producer, they asked him for jobs.

Packer gives many tips in his book on how to work hard, be smart, and climb to success despite obstacles.  As a mother I wanted to underline every line where he gave his mom credit for motivating him as a child to climb higher. But he also names people like his coach, a mentor, and comedian Kevin Hart who gave him good advice along his journey. It is generous for him to share their advice with us.
