The Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue had two separate structure fires back-to-back on Wednesday into early Thursday morning. The first Structure Fire, all companies were dispatched to a duplex located at 502 Harding Avenue, at 10:40 PM.
At 7:20 Saturday morning, Lenoir County 911 received a call reporting smoke coming from a home at 715 W. Washington St in Kinston. Fire department personnel arrived on scene to find active fire conditions. Crews are still working to bring the fire under control. W. Washington Avenue and Dewey Street are closed to all traffic until further notice.
A double 18-wheeler accident at the corner of Queen Street and Highway 70 has closed the roads to traffic in all four directions. The Kinston Police Department, Kinston Fire and Rescue, and the Lenoir County Emergency services are on scene.
Several agencies — including the Kinston Fire Department, Kinston Police Department, Lenoir County Emergency Services, North Lenoir Volunteer Fire Department and Southwood Fire Department — have been looking for a potential drowning victim in Kinston this afternoon. An eyewitness on the bank of the Neuse River behind the Family Dollar, 400 E. New Bern Road, Kinston, told officials he saw a woman along the bank of the river reach into the water to grab a bag. After watching her do that, he didn’t see her re-emerge from the river and, after going into the store, called officials to report what he’d seen.
City of Kinston Mayor Dontario Hardy has released a State of Emergency proclamation stating, “the Chief of Fire and Rescue along with Chief of Police…may restrict or deny access to any area or street” if that restriction “is necessary to promote efforts being made to overcome the emergency or to prevent further aggravation of the emergency…”. Several students have added fire safety to their class schedule this fall. To raise awareness about fire and carbon monoxide (CO) safety in the community and on campus, Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue and Lenoir Community College are partnering with First Alert, Campus Firewatch and the Michael H. Minger Foundation to participate in the third annual Town/Gown Fire Safety Community Service Project.
