As I scroll through all the "New Year, New Me" posts on social media this week, I can’t help but laugh. New year, same me. No matter how many plans I make, lists I create, or adorable gel pens I buy, procrastination is my loyal companion. There’s no denying it: I will always be the person who waits until the absolute last moment to start a project.
As we come to the beginning of a new year, most of us give at least a little thought to making some New Year’s resolutions. I gave up on making New Year’s resolutions because I never could stick to most of them. Of course, one of my resolutions always was to lose weight. I read a recent article that said we should not make such a resolution because we will end up being unhappy, unsuccessful, or both.
If you are like most, today you will make some “resolutions” – things you want to change about your life to become a better person. This tradition is not new. Roughly 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians held celebrations in honor of the new year.
The New Year offers us an opportunity to make a clean start on developing new life habits and even leave some behind us. Be sure to start your new year with an extra boost of good fortune by enjoying a meal sure to promise good blessings. The traditional foods in the South relating to good fortune are beans, greens and pork.
Thanks to the kindness of my son Michael and his wife Pam, Sandra and I were able to take in the Raleigh performance of the Tran-Siberian Orchestra, TSO for short. This group performed only one show at the PNC and then headed to Greensboro.

Between the holiday rush, a Myrtle Beach trip, and sickness, Sandra and I had not been to our gym for three weeks. When we returned from Myrtle Beach on Jan. 4, our gym had changed ownership and names. The gym we had known as Build-A-Body had become Good Bodies.

Well, here we are into a New Year, which I am sure all of us hope and pray will be filled with much joy and fulfillment of dreams and aspirations. I am sure that most of us during this past year have had our "ups and downs," but all of us have so much to be thankful for, and a lot of that thankfulness is expressed in music.
