The longtime practice of holding graduation ceremonies outdoors, an eventual casualty to the threat of inclement weather, will be restored at four LCPS high schools at month’s end as they respond to public health recommendations and the desire of families to see their students awarded diplomas.
Kinston, North Lenoir and South Lenoir high schools will hold commencements on their football fields and Lenoir County Learning Academy will host graduation on the grounds of the chapel at Kennedy Home, where the alternative school is located.

At Monday’s Lenoir County School Board meeting, it was announced that Superintendent Brent Williams was awarded the 2020/2021 Southeast Region Superintendent of the Year and is a nominee for State Superintendent of the Year. Today, members of the school district, school board members, county and city officials rode in their cars with signs, balloons, and even silly string as they passed Williams who thanked each participant as they drove past.
The Lenoir County Public School board voted on a hybrid option of Governor Cooper’s Plan B guidelines to reopening public school. W.D. Anderson made a motion for, “I move that Lenoir County Public Schools start the 2020/21 school year under Plan B - Transition, with the first 9 weeks virtual instruction. In-person instruction to begin with grades Pre-K through 2 and students with special needs in the second nine weeks, pending a two-week decline in COVID cases and a 5% or less positive testing rate for 14 days prior to the first day of in-person instruction, as reported by the Department of Public Instruction for Lenoir County.” The motion was seconded by Elijah Woods and passed by a 4-3 margin.

LCPS Superintendent Brent Williams stated in an email to parents this evening, “Please remember our no-cost meal service each day from 10:30am -12:30pm to various school sites. We served over 900 students today a breakfast and lunch meal for a total of over 1,800 meals served. We would like to see even more young people--- students or anyone else age 18 and younger--- take advantage of this opportunity.”

UPDATE: In response to Gov. Roy Cooper's executive order closing all public schools in the state for at least two weeks effective Monday, March 16, LCPS has designated Monday as a required teacher workday. Schools will be open for students and parents to recover any educational or personal items that they may need during the time our schools are closed. Monday also will be an opportunity for parents and students to pick up any school-issued iPads that they might not have already. More information on school access Monday will be provided Sunday afternoon.
