On Saturday, over $12,000 in scholarships and other gifts were given to the Distinguished Young Women of Lenoir County Class of 2024. The Distinguished Young Woman of Lenoir County program is part of a nationwide effort to recognize, reward, and encourage excellence and education among all young people. Seven senior girls competed for the scholarships. Participants were Gabby Smith, Tiyah Chapman, Leanna Kivett, Shamiah Hall, Grayson Lynch, Kalyn Brock, and Caitlin Waters.
Lenoir County Public Schools was among several school districts across the state to receive via email today an anonymous, non-specific threat to school safety. Notified immediately by LCPS, local law enforcement began an investigation and, out of an abundance of caution, dispatched additional personnel to our schools to conduct walk-throughs.
I recently heard a news report about the push to change how teachers grade their students’ work from a points-based system to a standard-based evaluation. Part of the ideas behind this push for “equity” in grading includes allowing retakes for tests, multiple revisions for essays, and eliminating behavioral considerations such as late work and absences as part of grades.
Snow Hill Primary gives out a weekly award called "Terrific Kid" awards. Each teacher at SHP chooses a student who has been responsible, shows great character, or has reached a personal goal. Mrs. Lindsey’s Child Care, located at 3157 HWY 258 N, celebrated its 8th anniversary on Thursday, September 14th. Lindsey Whitley, the Owner and Administrator of the facility, had organized an all-day event for the occasion. The celebration was attended by the entire staff, along with the children enrolled at the center.
The Distinguished Young Women of Lenoir County program proudly presents Adyson Whaley, Distinguished Young Woman of Lenoir County for 2023, in its annual program which will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 in the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Kinston High School. Whaley is currently a freshman at North Carolina State University and is the daughter of Bevan and Ginger Whaley.
Officials named Arendell Parrott Academy student, Miss Hannah Henderson (New Bern), as one of more than 16,000 Semifinalist in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth $28 million that will be offered next spring.
