Annette McDaniel, nurse case-manager at UNC Health Lenoir, and an employee this year for 40 years, says she was so surprised and a bit overwhelmed to learn recently that she is indeed related to the McDaniel family that started the hospital history in Kinston 117 years ago on June 27th.
June is National Cancer Survivor Month. According to the CDC, over eighteen million cancer survivors live in the United States. This includes over 165,000 men, women and children living in North Carolina. A cancer survivor is someone diagnosed with any type of cancer who is still living.
A car show is planned for June 17 at Lenoir Community College to benefit 2-year-old Colby Clayton of La Grange who has been diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive Retinoblastoma, cancer of the eye. The benefit will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. with prizes awarded at 2:30 p.m.
The Kinston Community Health Center, Inc., Healthy Blue and the Lenoir County Health Department are hosting a community baby shower on Saturday May 13th. Free baby items, Car seat checks, and cribettes distributed to those who qualify. Hope to see you there!

Friends and supporters along with the family of Gary E. Black recently provided $25,000 in donations that will permanently endow the Gary E. Black Memorial Impact Award. This initiates an annual award within the Lenoir Hospital Foundation to support the cost of continuing education for one non-clinical staff member of UNC Health Lenoir.
UNC Health Lenoir’s Board of Directors has named Crystal Hayden, DNP, RN, FACHE, as the organization’s new president and chief executive officer, effective May 28, 2023. Hayden has served as Chief Operating Officer at UNC Health Nash since 2019, and as Chief Nursing Officer at UNC Health Nash since 2016.

Lions Making Strides 2 Fight Diabetes is set to hold it’s 5th annual “STRIDES” Rockin’ Walk-A-Thon for Diabetes Awareness to raise awareness and funds for diabetes patients. The Lions Club initiative started in Lions International as one of five Lions initiatives and has now spread to throughout the world
The water consumers of Jones County regional water System, on Green Road in Jones County will be experiencing periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system starting on February 21st due to waterline construction.
The Craven County Health Department posted the following on their Facebook page. Craven, Pamlico, and Jones County residents! A Tri-County Mental Health Town Hall will be held on March 2 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the River Front Convention Center in New Bern.
The Lenoir County Health Department received confirmation from the North Carolina State Laboratory that a fox has tested positive for rabies. The animal was located in the northern part of the county in the Paul’s Path area. In January, a rabid raccoon was found in southern Lenoir County.
