Under the authority of the Controller, the Assistant Controller assists with oversight of the College’s accounting system and practices. Responsibilities include recording transactions, reporting financial data, and participating in a variety of projects that require significant financial expertise.

Several Greene Early College recently partnered with Kinston’s Public Service Department Annual Fall Cleanup. Planned every October since 2000, community volunteers are urged to participate in this event. Joined by GEC parents, Mario Mendoza and Soni Hawkins, Public Works Personnel, GEC students, and students from other schools, the group was assigned to cleanup Neuse Way Park
Lisa Byrd is a Jones County girl who, along with her husband, own and operates their family business called Byrds Towing. Byrd is an active member of Maysville Fire and EMS where she serves as the treasurer. She started communicating with the Jones County Board of Education in 2019 as a concerned parent, and in 2022 she’s on the ballot for a seat on the board.
Students from Lenoir County Early College High School researched the workings of the legal system in Lenoir County during a recent tour of the Lenoir County Courthouse.
Republican Salvador Abrego Tinoco is a 37-year-old graduate from South Lenoir High School. Originally from Seven Springs, he has been a advocate for growth and change in Greene County and would like to inject new visions and ideas to help further the quality of life of the citizens of Greene County. He’s running for the District 4 seat on the Greene County Board of Commissioners against Democrat incumbent Bennie Heath.

On Wednesday, the National FFA (Future Farmers of America) Creed Competition took place in Indianapolis, Indiana. The competition is based on writings of E.M. Tiffany (who wrote the FFA creed). The competition judges the participants on learning expectations, poised confidence, memorizing the creed, public speaking, and their answers to questions about agriculture asked by judges. The winners were announced and awarded on Thursday at the Indianapolis Colts Football Stadium and Rachel Noble from South Lenoir won first place out of 85,000 participants from around the country.
Michael Chastain hopes to be the next Lenoir County Commissioner representing District 5 (Contentnea, K5, K6, and K7). He retired from the US Postal Service in 2018 with 33 years of service. He worked the graveyard shift, which allowed him to work a part-time job with the Kinston/Lenoir County Parks & Recreation Department where he taught gymnastics. Chastain still does some work at Fairfield Recreation Center and with substitute teaching. Serving is in his blood.
On Friday, October 28th 2022, the Lenoir County Historical Association is giving a small number of visitors an opportunity to experience for themselves the alleged hauntings of Historic Harmony Hall. Visitors who purchase a ticket ahead of time will reserve a spot for the evening’s program.
Seeking to expand opportunities for GEC students, biology teacher, Shontia Blount, chartered HOSA at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and Health Science Education Division of ACTE, HOSA, Future, Health Professionals, is a national student organization. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.
Mike Causey, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal, went to Rochelle Middle School to present a Commissioner's Award for Heroism to Zsakiyah Sutton for her extraordinary actions during a fire in her home last November. “The courageous acts of this young lady helped save the life of her infant brother, and for that she is a true hero,” said Commissioner Causey. “It is an honor for me to present this award to her.”
North Carolina’s performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress given during the 2021-22 school year to fourth and eighth graders generally mirrored a national decline in reading and math skills as schools everywhere were beginning to recover ground lost to the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
