Jones County Manager stepping down, to assume ONWASA CEO role

Franky Howard will step down next month as Jones County Manager and assume the role of CEO for ONWASA, the primary water utility in Onslow County. His career with Jones County started in 2005 as the Agriculture Field Crops Agent with the NC Cooperative Extension Service. In 2007, Howard was the youngest County Manager in the state. “There is no doubt that he will continue to do great things in his future endeavors, just as he has done for Jones County,” said County Commissioner April Aycock. “No matter who his replacement is, that person will definitely have some big shoes to fill.”

Jones County Budget reduces tax rate, fifth year in a row

The Jones County Commissioners lowered the tax rate by two cents in the 2021-2022 Jones County budget. The budget included a county-wide cost of living adjustment (COLA) increase of 2.5%. Jones County Commissioners were excluded from the first COLA increase in at least four years. Jones County Commissioner April Aycock felt as if the pandemic opened a lot of eyes with health care in Jones County. “We are extremely limited with our medical services in the county,” said Aycock. “So by the health department being expanded to five days a week, it provides more accessibility to our county.”

Local officials respond to Cooper's request for civil penalties

“What the governor is seeking to do is conniving and dangerous to everyone in the state who cherishes their freedoms and balance of government,” said Lenoir County Commissioner Eric Rouse. “Under the veil of public health, he is trying to expand his powers into areas of government that he would not otherwise be permitted to or have authority over.”

“We will be following the order for sure and talking to individuals that could be in violation. We will be warning individuals who are not following the order and if they continue, we will follow up with the enforcement action. Everyone must do their part,” said City of Kinston Mayor Don Hardy.
